DESCRIPTION:Bedford Sinfonia will perform Svendsen Norwegian Rhapsody No. 3\, Milhaud Le boeuf sur le toit\, Andrzej Panufnik Concertino for Timpani and Percussion and Dvořák Symphony No. 7 in D minor. \nGuest conductor: Ian Smith \nSoloists: Rachel Gledhill & David Hext \nBedford Sinfonia’s upcoming concert includes several rarely performed works. Johan Svendsen’s Norwegian Rhapsody No. 3 will be followed by Darius Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit\, before highlighting the musical skills of Rachel Gledhill (timpani) and David Hext (percussion)\, two of this country’s pre-eminent percussionists\, in the Panufnik Concertino for timpani and percussion. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7\, considered by critics to be one of his greatest symphonies\, completes the programme. \nFree tickets for under-18s: We’re delighted to be able to offer a limited number of free tickets to our young audience! DESCRIPTION:To quote a review published in The Times shortly after the premiere at Birmingham Town Hall in 1846\, ‘The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued unanimous volley of plaudits\, vociferous and deafening … never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.’ \nElijah is based on a Biblical story\, this one from the Book of Kings. \nThe prophet Elijah has predicted a drought: punishment for those who worship the false God Baal. This includes King Ahab’s wife\, Jezebel. \nAfter Elijah is proved right\, he persuades the People to repent – and to kill Baal’s prophets. Their faith is rewarded with storm clouds and rain. But Jezebel\, furious\, forces Elijah into exile. \nAlone and hopeless in the wilderness\, Elijah is consoled first by angels and then – after a mighty storm\, an earthquake and a fire – by God himself. \nFollowing his trials\, Elijah is whisked up to heaven in a fiery chariot. DESCRIPTION:The BSO will be performing: \nElgar – Violin Concerto \nTchaikovsky -Symphony No. 5 \nGuest conductor: John Beswick \nSoloist: Michael Foyle \nThe Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra will present just two works in their forthcoming concert\, but they are formidable compositions by giants of 19th and 20th century classical music. Edward Elgar’s technically difficult as well as musically appealing Violin Concerto\, in B minor\, Opus 61 will be performed by the multi award-winning violinist\, Michael Foyle. The second half of the programme will be devoted to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Symphony No. 5 in E minor\, Opus 64\, in which\, although not explicitly nationalistic\, a distinctively Russian flavour pervades many of the themes. \n
