DESCRIPTION:Bedford Choral Society and Bedford Sinfonia will be conducted by Ian Smith in a performance of Handel The King shall Rejoice\, Michael Rose Songs of Innocence and Experience\, Ireland A Downland Suite and a new piece commissioned by Bedford Choral Society from composer Greg May\, titled Carved Anew. (Please note this is a change from the previously advertised programme.) \nComposer and pianist Greg May was born and raised in north Bedfordshire and was a student at Bedford Modern School from 2014-2020. He studied at the Junior Royal Academy of Music\, and in 2020 was a winner in the BBC Young Composer Competition\, resulting in a commission for the BBC Concert Orchestra.\nGreg went on to read music at Clare College Cambridge\, where he graduated with a double first in 2023\, and is currently studying for a masters degree in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

It will be followed by two orchestral songs by Holst\, Country Song and Marching Song\, which will then lead to the Arnold Clarinet Concerto No. 2 played by Paul Harris\, an enthusiastic champion of Arnold’s music and author of the composer’s biography. Paul will also give a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm about the composer and the concerto. DESCRIPTION:Bedford Choral Society\, accompanied by Bedford Sinfonia and conducted by Ian Smith\, will perform: \nBob Chilcott  Little Jazz Mass \nA highly original and effective concert setting of the Latin Missa brevis\, in which the various movements embrace a variety of jazz styles. \nAriel Ramirez  Misa Criolla \nIn 1963 Ramírez created his widely popular Misa Criolla on a Spanish translation of the traditional liturgical text\, including folkloric interpolations such as the “lara\, lara” passage in the Credo. Each movement of the compact mass is based on specific folk material\, particularly dance rhythms: the austere vidala-baguala of northern Argentina for the Kyrie\, the carnavalito and yaraví from the same area for the Gloria\, the obsessive chacerera trunca from central Argentina for the Credo\, the syncopated Bolivian carnaval cochabambino for the Sanctus\, and the Agnus Dei is composed in the characteristic style of the southern pampas. \nDavid Fanshawe  African Sanctus \nAfrican Sanctus is a 1972 choral mass and is the best-known work of British composer and collector of world musics David Fanshawe.

Johan Svendsen’s Norwegian Rhapsody No. 3 will be followed by Darius Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit\, before highlighting the musical skills of Rachel Gledhill (timpani) and David Hext (percussion)\, two of this country’s pre-eminent percussionists\, in the Panufnik Concertino for timpani and percussion. DESCRIPTION:To quote a review published in The Times shortly after the premiere at Birmingham Town Hall in 1846\, ‘The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued unanimous volley of plaudits\, vociferous and deafening … never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.’ \nElijah is based on a Biblical story\, this one from the Book of Kings. \nThe prophet Elijah has predicted a drought: punishment for those who worship the false God Baal. This includes King Ahab’s wife\, Jezebel. \nAfter Elijah is proved right\, he persuades the People to repent – and to kill Baal’s prophets. Their faith is rewarded with storm clouds and rain. But Jezebel\, furious\, forces Elijah into exile. \nAlone and hopeless in the wilderness\, Elijah is consoled first by angels and then – after a mighty storm\, an earthquake and a fire – by God himself. \nFollowing his trials\, Elijah is whisked up to heaven in a fiery chariot.
